Field record books, 1861-1863.

Records, 1861-1863, kept by Taylor while serving as acting quartermaster at H.Q., Army of the Mississippi, and, from November 1862, as quartermaster writing from H.Q., Army of the Cumberland. They include reports on people and articles employed and hired at Tipton (Mo.), such as teamsters, mule packers, and wagon masters, December, 1861 - January, 1862; copies of official letters and telegrams sent by him, July, 1862 - August, 1863; returns of clothing, and camp and garrison equipment received and issued at Tipton, October - December, 1861; and report of stores received for transportation and distribution at Tipton, December, 1861 - January, 1862. The letters and telegrams, which compose the bulk of the material, deal with various aspects of his responsiblity to provision the army. They discuss shortages and items needed, as well as regulations about requisitioning supplies and compensating civilians.

During the Civil War he became the leader of the Peace Democrats, also known as Copperheads, who supported negotiating with the Southern states to end the war.
